CAE Writing a Formal Letter

TASK. A friend of yours is applying for a job as a holiday representative with an international organization. The company has asked you to provide a character reference for your friend. The reference should indicate how long you have known the person. It must also include a detailed description of the person’s character and the reasons why he or she would be suitable for the job.

Dear Sir / Madam

I am writing to you regarding Sara Rodríguez. I have known Sara personally for the most part of the last two years as both a friend and colleague in my capacity as a foreign languages teacher and I have come to admire her friendliness, charm and outgoing personality as well as her patience and understanding of other people’s feelings. I strongly believe that her skills and personality traits would make of Sara the perfect candidate for a holiday representative at your organisation.

When I met Sara, we were both studying for a Bachelor’s degree in English Studies. At the time, not only was Sara capable of earning above-average grades in all subjects but also very active as a member of the student union. Her contributions included holding meetings with the teaching staff and arranging sightseeing tours for Erasmus students. Her organisational and leadership skills were second to none and her level headedness made her invaluable when dealing with problems.

It is my belief that working as a holiday representative requires a high degree of adaptability insofar as the position involves being firm on the one hand but also flexible on the other. Sara is undeniably versatile in this sense, as she is capable of coping with difficult situations without forgetting her role as a salesperson, something that owes to her experience at college as well as to her natural predisposition. Furthermore, she is an optimistic and lively person who enjoys performing, both as an amateur actress and as a singer, attributes which may come in useful when entertaining the customers at their holiday destinations.

I am therefore in full support of Sara’s application and have no hesitation in recommending her to your company.

Yours faithfully,

Rocío Stevenson

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator

Following our discussion last day on psychometric tests and their reliability, today I would like to share with you some information on a test called the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, best known as MBTI. As you may recall from our last class, this test was based on the assumption that character is largely decided from birth. It was Jung who laid the foundation of this theory. He claimed that there are different psychological types that can be classified according to functions: two perceiving functions (sensation and intuition) and two judging functions (thinking and feeling) which are in turn modified by two attitudes types (extraversion and introversion).
