First Certificate – An essay

You have listened to a radio programme about the impact of smoking on people’s health. Now, your English teacher has asked you to write an essay. Write an essay using all the notes and give reasons for your point of view.

Smoking is responsible for many health problems throughout the world. Do you think it should be made illegal?

Write about:

  1. lung cancer
  2. passive smoking
  3. your own idea

Write your answer in 140-190 words in an appropriate style

It is often argued that smoking is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide and a major risk for a number of health problems but should it be illegalised?

There is no denying that smoking causes lung cancer. Moreover, the chemicals in a cigarette can also attack other organs such as the oesophagus or the larynx when they enter our blood stream. However, many smokers who are aware of this fact do not give up smoking.

It could be argued that, while smokers may be free to harm their own health, there is no justification for their actions if these affect others. Such is the case of passive smoking and, on these grounds, smoking should be forbidden.

Though it is reasonable to ban smoking from public spaces like restaurants, it is not equally reasonable to completely illegalise it. Educating people about the risks that smoking entails is a better way of addressing the issue.

To conclude, I would say that paternalist solutions such as making smoking illegal are hardly the best approach. Educating people in healthy habits is a wiser measure as far as I am concerned.

TASK. Your English teacher has asked you to write a story. Your story must have the following title: A terrible holiday. Write about 100 words.

A terrible holiday

Last summer I went on a trip to the beach with a few friends. We decided to go by coach because it was cheaper than going by car but, as soon as we got to the station, I realised that I had forgotten my swimsuit.

From then on, things only went from bad to worse. Our bus was delayed due to heavy traffic and we had to wait for almost two hours before finally setting off.

Eventually, we managed to get to our destination. We left our stuff at the hotel and went to the beach but, no sooner had we set foot on it than it started raining. I couldn’t believe our bad luck! In the end, we had to spend the rest of our holidays inside the hotel.

PET Writing – Letter about a film

This is part of a letter you receive from a friend.

In your next letter, can you please tell me about a film you like? What’s it about? Why do you like it?

Now write a letter answering your friend’s questions. Write your letter in about 100 words.

Dear Paul,

Thanks for your letter. Answering your question, a film I’ve recently seen I quite enjoyed is Interstellar. It’s a science fiction movie starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway set in a post-apocalyptic world where some kind of dust makes life on Earth almost impossible. The main character, a former astronaut, travels to space to find a suitable planet where humankind can settle.

I really liked the special effects and the way the plot develops into a complex theory on how we understand time and space.

Watch the film! I’m sure you’ll like it!

See you,

FCE Writing an Informal Email

Dear Chloe,

Thanks for your email. It’s so great to hear from you! School’s just finished so I’m trying to make up my mind over what to do this summer.

I’m travelling to New York next week and I’m sure it’s going to be awesome! I’ll probably look in on Sarah while I’m there because it’s been ages since we last met. As soon as I get back, I’m planning to visit my grandma in Cordoba. She has this amazing country house where she keeps animals and a huge swimming pool to relax. After that, I’m not really sure of what I’ll do, maybe go to the beach for a few days or just stay at home doing nothing for a change.

Anyway, what I’m sure about is that I won’t be working at all. I have holidays for almost two months and I plan on making the most out of them.

Please, write as soon as possible and let me know what your plans for the summer are. Maybe we can get together soon? Let me know if you are free some time next week. It’d be great to see you again!

Lots of love,

CAE Writing a Proposal

You are on the planning committee representing your country for an international cultural festival in London. Write a proposal for the festival organiser suggesting what should be included in the festival to represent the culture of your country and explaining why you think the aspects you have chosen would be of special interest.

Write your proposal.

Proposal for the international festival in London

The aim of this proposal is to outline my suggestions with regards our country’s contribution to the international festival in London.

Our national history

There is no denying the fact that Spain’s identity has been shaped by its Jewish, Muslim and Catholic heritage. Furthermore, it is the way in which these cultures intertwined back in medieval times, what owes for many of our traditions. Historic religious diversity is best felt nowadays in the wealth of monuments scattered throughout Spain’s geography. Therefore, I suggest we show a photographic display of the most representative landmarks followed by a guided online tour of the Alhambra in Granada, Santa Maria La Blanca in Toledo and Santiago’s Cathedral in Galicia, representing Muslim, Jewish and Catholic heritage respectively.

Outdoor life

Spain has a wide range of outdoor activities to offer. Should visitors find themselves at a loss as to which destination choose, our DVD will give them advice on which are the best holiday locations. This includes information on Madrid and Barcelona’s nightlife, impressive wildlife sanctuaries in the Canary Islands’ and windsurfing shrines such as San Sebastian or Cadiz.

Spain is a land that blends tradition and innovation. In order to introduce participants to this unique mixture of new and old art representations I suggest that Javier Sierra, one of our most international writers, gives a lecture on the Prado Museum, which has recently been subject to one of his novels. In addition to this, we could also offer a live flamenco performance. For the latter, Estrella Morente and Joaquin Cortes would be obvious choices.

I trust that the scheme outlined in this proposal meets with your approval.

CAE Writing a Formal Letter

TASK. A friend of yours is applying for a job as a holiday representative with an international organization. The company has asked you to provide a character reference for your friend. The reference should indicate how long you have known the person. It must also include a detailed description of the person’s character and the reasons why he or she would be suitable for the job.

Dear Sir / Madam

I am writing to you regarding Sara Rodríguez. I have known Sara personally for the most part of the last two years as both a friend and colleague in my capacity as a foreign languages teacher and I have come to admire her friendliness, charm and outgoing personality as well as her patience and understanding of other people’s feelings. I strongly believe that her skills and personality traits would make of Sara the perfect candidate for a holiday representative at your organisation.

When I met Sara, we were both studying for a Bachelor’s degree in English Studies. At the time, not only was Sara capable of earning above-average grades in all subjects but also very active as a member of the student union. Her contributions included holding meetings with the teaching staff and arranging sightseeing tours for Erasmus students. Her organisational and leadership skills were second to none and her level headedness made her invaluable when dealing with problems.

It is my belief that working as a holiday representative requires a high degree of adaptability insofar as the position involves being firm on the one hand but also flexible on the other. Sara is undeniably versatile in this sense, as she is capable of coping with difficult situations without forgetting her role as a salesperson, something that owes to her experience at college as well as to her natural predisposition. Furthermore, she is an optimistic and lively person who enjoys performing, both as an amateur actress and as a singer, attributes which may come in useful when entertaining the customers at their holiday destinations.

I am therefore in full support of Sara’s application and have no hesitation in recommending her to your company.

Yours faithfully,

Rocío Stevenson
